Are Your Hands Properly Placed on Your Steering Wheel?

Albert Matthews's Blog | Are Your Hands Properly Placed on Your Steering Wheel?

Flashback to when you began driving and learning all the do’s and don’ts of operating a car. We were taught early on how to place our hands on the steering wheel when we began driving a vehicle. For decades, we were given the standard instruction to hold the steering wheel at the 10 and 2 positions, as if you are looking at a clock. This is how most of us learned and passed our drivers test doing the exact thing.

However, things have changed and now we have more information.

The hand placement has changed and is no longer the safest way to grip your steering wheel. Driving with your hands in that location could cost you your arms or hands if your airbag deploys.

In order to avoid the airbag altogether, driving instructors are now advising you should grip the wheel at 9 and 3 o'clock.

Relax and try not to grip the steering wheel tightly and be sure to have your seat positioned properly.

Relax your grip and always be safe out there!
